Offline Access using Google Gears
In the normal scheme of things, an internet connection would be considered an absolute necessity for accessing your e-mail account. But that sort of system is now passé. You may not be able to have your cake and eat it too in real life, but with Google Gears you can manage to browse through your e-mail account even if you get unplugged from the Internet. Google Gears I s actually a plug in that can extend your browser to create a richer platform for web applications. The plug in can be downloaded for free from http://gears.google.com . The size of the file is quite small, and the download and installation process are usually over in a jiffy. The minimum system requirements are usually over in a jiffy. The minimum system requirements are Windows XP/Vista and the browser requirements are Firefox 1.5+ and IE6+.
Once the application is installed, Gmail will download your e-mail, every last gigabyte of it to your desktop. To Access your account in the offline mode, you still have to go through the sign-up process, and the Gmail account will appear on your computer screen in the same way as it does in the online mode. Then onwards, whenever you compose new e-mails, they will be stored in the outbox and will automatically get sent to their destination as soon as you get online. Gmail works in the offline mode, by using the local cache, but it continues to synchronize your mail with the server in the background. One advantage of using offline mode is that is turns out to be much faster, as Gmail does not have to hit the Google server to download your old e-mails.
The scope of Google Gears is not limited to Gmail only. In fact, this plug-in is proving to be a boon for developers around the world who are using it to provide offline interaction to the visitors to their site, and to create content based on geographical location. A number of web-based applications, including Google Reader and Google Docs, are currently compatible with Google Gears. Popular websites like Zoho and Remember the Milk have also been using Gears since their inception. In fact, the ability to access the documents stored in your Zoho account or in Google Docs can turn out to be a great convenience for most users. It is almost like having a new version of Office software, with many web related features right there on your desktop.
Just because you have the plug-in installed in your browser. It does not mean that every website using Google Gears will automatically be able to download its information on your desktop. Before the download happens, a pop up box will appear on the screen and you will be asked if you wish to allow the site to use Gears. You can cancel the popup if you have no need for the data from this site. But if you need it, then you will have to enable Gears by checking “ I trust this site. Allow it to use Gears. “it is also possible for you to change your preferences at any later stage. This system is also available in versions that are compatible withMobile and Linux.

Intel to Support Open Source Software Platform, Tizen™

More information about Tizen™ can be obtained in this press release by The Linux Foundation on the 27th September 2011, which is available below:-
LiMo Foundation and Linux Foundation Announce New Open Source Software Platform, Tizen™
New cross-device and cross-architecture platform will drive standards-based web applications
September 27, 2011 – LONDON, ENGLAND and SAN FRANCISCO, USA – LiMo Foundation™ and The Linux Foundation today announced a new open source project, Tizen™, to develop a Linux-based device software platform. Hosted at The Linux Foundation, Tizen is a standards-based, cross-architecture software platform, which supports multiple device categories including smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, netbooks and in-vehicle infotainment systems. The initial release of Tizen is targeted for Q1 2012, enabling first devices to come to market in mid-2012.
Tizen combines the best open source technologies from LiMo and The Linux Foundation and adds a robust and flexible standards-based HTML5 and WAC web development environment within which device-independent applications can be produced efficiently for unconstrained cross-platform deployment. This approach leverages the robustness and flexibility of HTML5 which is rapidly emerging as a preferred application environment for mobile applications and the broad carrier support of the Wholesale Applications Community (WAC). Tizen additionally carries a state-of-the-art reference user interface enabling the creation of highly attractive and innovative user experience that can be further customized by operators and manufacturers.
“LiMo Foundation views Tizen as a well-timed step change which unites major mobile Linux proponents within a renewed ecosystem with an open web vision of application development which will help device vendors to innovate through software and liberalize access to consumers for developers and service providers,” said Morgan Gillis, Executive Director of LiMo Foundation. “LiMo will maintain its focus on providing the industry with a broadly backed vendor- and service-neutral ecosystem grounded in the spirit of open and unconstrained opportunity that is embodied by Linux.”
The mobile industry continues to embrace Linux and open source technologies as key factors in lowering device realization cost, increasing flexibility and improving time to market and it is expected that Tizen will further enhance these effects due to its cross-category reach and strong focus on open standards.
“The Linux Foundation is pleased to host the Tizen platform,” said Jim Zemlin, Executive Director of The Linux Foundation. “Open source platforms such as Tizen are good for Linux as they further its adoption across device categories. We look forward to collaborating with the LiMo Foundation and its members on this project.”

Alienware Area 51 M9750

The Area-51 M9750 is a top-of-the-line gaming notebook from Alienware. It features an Intel Core 2 Duo processor and is available with dual Nvidia high-performance video cards. The M9750 is based on Intel’s previous Centrino Duo platform. Even though it does not use Santa Rosa, it is still more than capable of handling any task.
Our review unit has with the following specifications:
* Intel Core 2 Duo T7600 (2.33GHz/ 667MHz FSB/ 4MB L2 cache)
* DUAL Nvidia GeForce Go 7950GTX video cards with 512MB DDR3 each (1024MB total) – SLI enabled
* 2GB DDR2-667 RAM (4GB available)
* Two 160GB 7200RPM Hitachi Travelstar SATA hard drives in RAID 0 (RAID 1 available)
* 17” WUXGA (1920x1200) glossy display
* Windows XP Media Center 2005 with TV tuner
* 8X DVD dual layer burner
* Intel PRO/Wireless 4965AGN WLAN
* Internal Bluetooth
Our system as configured is $4,448 with a one-year warranty. Two- and three- year warranties are available for $200 and $300 respectively.
Build & Design
An Alienware is like a high-end sports car; pictures do not do either of them justice. The M9750 has Alienware’s famous out-of-this–world case design which instantly sets it apart from every other notebook in its class.
The M9750 is entirely of one color - black. The machine looks extremely sleek, like a stealth aircraft. Personally, I find the look to be visually stimulating and attractive. No matter where this machine is taken, it will turn heads. I took the M9750 to a local coffee shop and everyone there took a long, hard look at it.
Alienware nailed build quality on the head with the M9750. The machine is constructed from high strength plastic. I was not able to detect any flex in the chassis. Even though the palm rests are quite expansive, I could not get them to budge applying any amount of pressure. There might as well be two-by-fours lining the inside of the chassis.
Usually, notebooks with 17” displays flex quite a bit when twisted from side to side, which is understandable given they are so large. However, the M9750’s 17” display hardly moves when twisted. The strength of the display is commendable; I believe Alienware’s unique lid design has something to do with this.
The surfaces of the M9750 with the exception of the area surrounding the screen and just below it are pleasing to touch as they are soft and rubberized. Fingerprints do not show easily. I did not get the usual “sweaty palm feeling” like I do with glossy-surfaced machines. The area around the display and just below it are glossy black plastic which does show fingerprints; however, this area is unlikely to be touched often.
Screen
Customers can choose between a WXGA+ (1440x900 pixels) or WUXGA (1920x1200 pixels) display; our review unit has the latter. Both displays have a glossy coating.
The picture quality of the display is excellent; images have crisp detail and colors look vivid. Blacks look like blacks and whites look like whites. I did not notice any hints of ghosting while gaming. Our test unit had a pixel-perfect display.
Viewing angles are generally good; from the sides, the picture does not lose anything; from above, colors appear slightly washed out but the colors are still there. From below however, the image gets darker than one would expect and the viewing angle is not the best.
The high resolution of the 1920x1200 WUXGA display is amazing for gaming and general tasks. There is so much real estate for multiple windows and multitasking. Since the display is so wide there is basically no side-to-side scrolling.
This is a true high-definition resolution – the M9750 is available with a Blu-ray disc player and based on the beautiful quality of the HD clips I watched, I can only imagine how awesome a full high-definition movie would be.
On the whole the 17” WUXGA display on our test unit is phenomenal for gaming, movies, and generally anything one would do on a computer. It is very enjoyable to use and look at.

Acer Aspire 5738DG-6165 All-Purpose Laptop
The Acer Aspire 5738DG-6165 grafts a 3D panel onto a mainstream laptop. Its a gimmick, a feature that caters to maybe 1 percent of the computing population--and at first I was completely skeptical. People are offering 3D as a crowd-pleasing extra in movie theaters, as a ploy to justify the purchase of Blu-ray discs, and now as a new reason to buy a high-end graphics card. But in a $780 all-purpose laptop?
After kicking the tires on the 5738DG-6165 for a few days, Ive seen some mixed, finicky--but also at times surprisingly good--results. Since the rest of the laptop (even the discrete GPU driving the visual experience) is so average, I have to make the 3D panel the focal point of this review.
But before we dive into the specifics of the panel, you need to understand the three different 3D technologies currently available. The first approach is the old standby, in which you use red-blue cardboard glasses. The effect tints your world a little (mutes colors), but its fairly effective in everything from comic books to movies. The second approach is more advanced. A while back, nVidia proudly trotted out its 3D Vision goggles--powered, shuttered glasses that blink in time with a screens refresh rate. Similar takes on the technology have been used for some time, and it yields pretty solid results. With nVidias version, you plug the goggles into a powerful PC, make sure that your screen has at least a 120Hz refresh rate (or, if its a CRT, at least 100Hz), and youre in business. The third approach, employed in the Acer laptop, uses polarized lenses. In this case the entire thing works thanks to a combination of Oakley-shades look-alikes, the polarized panel, and TriDef software.
